Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan, named Heian-kyo, from 794 to 1869, for more than 1,000 years, being sometimes called thousand-year capital. As many as 17 of temples, shrines, and castle have been designated in World Heritage Site. Even during World War II, the city was spared from the bombing, and cultural heritages were mostly preserved. While being the city with tradition, Kyoto leads the world's famous companies such as Shimadzu, Rohm, and Nintendo. The population is approximately 1.74 million, which makes one of the ten’s biggest cities in Japan.
